Project Brief

The year is 2045 and New Zealand is just starting to get back on its feet after the Human-Martian War ended 5 years ago. Because nuclear weapons were used by Earthlings to expel the invaders, much of the surface of Earth has become irradiated and is either uninhabitable or very dangerous to live in.

The Palmerston North City Council (PNCC) is looking to create an animated Public Service Announcement (PSA) to help people to survive in the now nearly desolate landscape of the Manawatū.

Below is a list of the dangers of “The Wilds” that the PNCC want to give helpful advice about in their PSA:
  • Radioactive rivers, streams, lakes, and ponds.
  • Mutated creatures such as: Alpaca Wolves, Razor-backed Cows, Eight-legged eels, and the dreaded Acid Kiwi (2-metres tall, wings mutated to spray acid).
  • Raiders
  • Temporal distortion fields (lock you in time for years at a time)
  • Rad Zombies
The PNCC wants you to choose one of the above dangers (or another that you confirm with your teacher is a danger of The Wilds). Having chosen the danger, you will use iterative process to create an 8-16 second segment of this animated PSA.

The message should have a clear message. e.g. "Stay away from the Acid Kiwi it is dangerous". You may want to include written text and/or a voice over to make it clear.

They have asked that the video is to follow the Gigantic art style as per the YouTuber Mark Rise. It should fit well on 1920x1080 Screens.

The video should start blank green screen and end with a blank green screen. The green Hex Code is: 
B8DBA1

The PNCC want to make their points clear
​so a low level of cartoon violence is acceptable.

Steps to success

You will choose a safety message that you want to animate and develop a digital technologies outcome to present it. Safety messages help us navigate our world and transmit vital information that can protect us. You can choose a safety message from the list above or create one yourself.

You will need to do these three things:
Describe the users. Who are the people who are likely going to see your message? how can you ensure your safety message will attract them.
Describe the purpose of your outcome. What is it intended to do? how will it warn or inform people? What message do you want people to learn?
Describe the requirements and specifications. Requirements are things you need to do, while specifications are short, specific statements that are measurable — you should be able to tick them off. What does your safety animation need to have, be, or do in order to achieve its purpose? What does your safety message need to have, be, or do in order to work best for the people it is intended for?

Once you have decided on these, you can start developing your outcome.
  • Think about and choose the most appropriate tools or techniques to use to create your outcome. You must keep evidence of which ones you used.
  • Ensure you follow conventions for the tools or techniques that are relevant to the outcome you are developing.
  • Use your knowledge of the relevant tools and techniques to ensure you apply them in the best way you can.
  • Test your outcome throughout the development process and use that information to make improvements during the development process. You will need to keep evidence of this.
  • Trial your outcome with other people, including potential end user(s). Show them your animation and ask them about it and use that information to make improvements. You will need to keep evidence of this.

​Your outcome needs to be fit for purpose. That means it meets the requirements and specifications that you have described, considers the potential users and context, and performs as intended. You will need to show this in your outcome and in your additional evidence.

Getting Started

1.) Create a folder for your work called "AS92005 - Your Name - Attempt 1"
2.) Download the documentation template into your folder
3.) Scan through the project brief 
4.) In the documentation identify the purpose, potential users, requirements and specifications.
5.) Create your assets in Adobe Illustrator, Audacity
5a.) For Merit ensure you are following conventions when creating your assets
5b.) For Excellence ensure you are optimally creating your assets (e.g. good folder structure, naming conventions, multiple outcomes)
6.) Combine your assets in After Effects to create your animation
7.) Test the outcome for basic functionality
7a.) Take information from testing and make improvements
7b.) Take information from trialling with others to improve its fitness for purpose

How to present your learning

At the end of this task, you will need to hand in your outcome and evidence to your teacher for marking. You will also need to show that you have done the following:
  • described the purpose, users, requirements, and specifications for your outcome
  • tested your outcome yourself throughout the development process, trialled it with other people, and made improvements to enhance and refine it based on the information you gathered
  • made an outcome which is fit for purpose.
Evidence for these could take the form of:
  • annotated screenshots
  • audio or video recordings, or screencasts
  • planning boards
  • testing documentation (such as testing tables)
  • images
  • descriptions of what you have done and why.
Besides your outcome, any evidence you hand in should be no more than five A4 pages or no more than 3 minutes of video or audio. Talk with your teacher if you would like to present your evidence in another way.

Glossary

Tools and techniques
Tools refer to the software packages that you will use to develop the outcome. We have used:
  • Adobe Illustrator
  • Adobe After Effects
  • Audacity
You may use additional software or other software, but do negotiate this with your teacher.
They also refer to the specific tools you use in these packages such as "the rounded rectangle tool"

Optimally refers to the student having applied tools or techniques in the best way practicable for a particular task.

Examples of Optimally working on your project:

- Audio/visual is clear
- Animations are smooth

Testing means taking the outcome and running tests by yourself to ensure functionality

Trialling
Trialling refers to testing, but allowing others to give feedback

In either case to get a Merit or Excellence you must make improvements from the testing/trialling.
