Every application on a Windows\Mac\Android device has applications to work with different files.

For example we can use Adobe photoshop to work on photos
We can use windows media player to open movie files.

We call these applications tools.
Task: Competitive Brain Storm
In your one note try to list as many apps that you can that open these sorts of files. It doesn't matter if they are installed on the school computers or on your phone.

Somehow, Whenever you open a file on your computer it knows what type of program to use.

e.g. If I open a picture file... it knows to open it in windows picture viewer.

Class Activity. Think Pair Share
Think about the following two questions:
"How does the computer know what application to use in order to open it?"
"Can you change which application to use when you open it?"

Share your answers with someone next to you
Share with the class.
